The singer, known as the bearded lady, beat firm favourites Sweden to the top spot after giving one of the most glamorous and memorable performances of the contest.

"This is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom, " a tearful Conchita said as she accepted the trophy.

"We are unity and we are unstoppable."

But just who is Austria's drag queen, who had to endure a barrage of homophobic and transphobic attacks prior to her performance?

- The singer - real name Tom Neuwirth - was born in Gmunden, Austria in 1988 and is a familiar face in her own country after taking part in a few reality TV shows, including The Hardest Jobs of Austria and Wild Girls.

- Neuwirth reached the final of the 2007 Austrian casting show Stramania, before bringing out his drag queen alter ego in 2011.

- She competed in the talent show Die Große Chance and took second place, becoming a national icon in Austria as the show progressed.
